Play: Karnabhara
Playwright: Bhasa Mahakavi
Director: Sripad Bhat
Group: Sangama Kalavider Manipal, Udupi, Karnataka
Language: Tulu
Duration: 1 hr 15 mins
Play: Karnabhara challenges the notions of conventional heroism. Its significance is because of its strong humanistic conception of the hero, Karna, and the performance emphasizes his heroic courage. The chorus, in addition to contributing to the rhythm and movements of the play, identifies with Karna. The Bharathavakya that our leaders may have his character, thus, becomes a theatrical presentation rather than a statement.

The play unfolds on several planes: direct narration and a play within the play; history and mythology; the visual and the aural; prose and poetry; the print and electronic media.
