New wave film-makers demand special theatres for their films

Young Indian film-makers and directors of ‘offbeat’ or ‘new wave’ films have pitched in for creating special theatres for showing their films. Addressing a joint press conference in the ‘Meet the Directors – Indian Feature and Non-feature films’ section at the 43rd International Film Festival of India in Panaji, Goa today they felt that there are dedicated viewers for their films but in the absence of a proper distribution mechanism the films are not being released in multiplexes.

The Director of ‘Char : The No-Man’s Island’ Sourav Sarangi said that his film is being shown in Japan and other international film festivals, but it has no takers in India. The Director of ‘Anhey Ghorhey Da Daan’ Gurvinder Singh said that there is a crying need to have a chain of theatres which will show only new wave cinema. The Director of ‘Vanishing Point’ Abhijit Mazumdar and the Director of ‘Lessons in Forgetting’ Unni Vijayan also agreed with them.

‘Char : The No-Man’s Island’ is the story of Rubel, a fourteen-year-old boy who smuggles rice by crossing the river Ganga. The same river eroded his entire village when he was just four. Seven years later, a fragile tiny island called Char formed within the large river. The homeless families from both India and Bangladesh shifted to this forbidden zone. Rubel tries to combine school and smuggling together. However, the demands at home build up. Desperate for a job, Rubel jumps on a train bound for Kerala. Sourav Sarangi explained that his film has tried to trace the conflict between the nature and the human beings as also the indomitable spirit of the marginal man to fight back for his livelihood.

NFDC film ‘Anhey Ghorhey Da Daan’ is the story of a dalit family in a village in Punjab which wakes up to the news of the demolition of a house of one of their community members. Father, a silent sympathizer, joins his community in demanding justice for the affected family. The same day, his son Melu, a cycle-rickshaw puller in the city, is participating in a strike by his union. Cycling through the city streets, Melu feels lost and wonders where to go and what to do. Back in the village, his mother feels humiliated at the treatment meted out by the landlords in whose fields she works. A man wonders asking for the traditional alms while Father decides to visit the city with a friend, even as his daughter Dayalo walks through the village streets in the night. ‘Anhey Ghorhey Da Daan’ has won many awards in various festivals.

‘Vanishing Point’ is the story of two friends Aurko and Sachin. They are travelling by a car to look for locations for a small film they are planning to make. Aurko is perpetually high on marijuana. Sachin doesn’t approve of Aurko’s smoking habit. Aurko comes across an old man whom he keeps seeing at different points of their journey. He gets mesmerized and tries to follow him. Sachin loses track of Aurko. Aurko is left alone in the darkness. As he continues to walk towards his destination, robbers attack him. The journey derails into a realm of the unknown.

‘Lessons in Forgetting’ is a gripping and heartwarming story of redemption, forgiveness and second chances. The story is woven around a single father, J.A. Krishnamurthy, or JAK, who relentlessly follows a trail to find out how his teenage daughter, Smriti, ended up on a hospital bed, almost dead. Helping JAK in his chase is a single mother Meera, whose husband has walked out on their marriage, leaving her to bring up their two growing children and care for her aging mother and grandmother, all on her own.

Directors of ‘Samhita’ Sumitra Bhave and Sunil Sukthankar, also addressed a press conference later today and explained the nuances of the storyline of their film. The story of the film ‘Samhita’ goes like this: an ailing film producer wants his wife to produce a film on his favorite story – a story of passion and surrender between a king and a court singer. The wife hands over the responsibility to Revati who is going through a strained relationship with her husband. She meets the woman writer, Tara, an aristocrat spinster. Hemangi, a well-known actress who is in a live-in-relationship with a painter, is chosen for the role of the court singer.
 

ಮಂಡ್ಯ ರಮೇಶ್ ಎನ್ ಎಸ್ ಡಿ ಗೆ ತರ್ತಾರೆ ಆಲೀಬಾಬ

Jashn-e-Bachpan - the national theatre festival for children - is back. Held every alternate year, this will be the 11th Jashne Bachpan festival to be hosted by National School of Drama with as many as 17 plays in nine different languages performed by children. The 10-day festival which promises a mix of fantasies, history, comedy and social issues will start on November 18. 

The festival will see plays from all over the country and performances by special children. Three plays will be performed by them including Dakghar as the opening performance. The play is about a boy named Amal who desperately waits for a letter from the king knowing him to be the greatest authority of the land. He firmly believes that the king will write to him. The play's dialogues are very much like the lines of a poem that goes on forming a story as it proceeds. 

Dastaan-e-Dilli, again by special children, will mark the end of the festival. The play opens with a delightful re-telling of Krishna and his childhood exploits on the banks of the Yamuna off Kalindi Kunj and it will end with a vision of 'Dilli' in the future seen through the eyes of its special children. 

There will be theatre groups from Assam, Karnataka, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Kerala, Manipur and Tamil Nadu and even Bangladesh and Nepal will participate.

India International Trade Fair 2012

 The 32nd edition of the India International Trade Fair was inaugurated by Hon’ble 

President of India, Mr. Pranab Mukherjee on November 14, 2012 at Hamsadhwani Theatre, Pragati Maidan, and New Delhi.

His Excellency, Prime Minister of Belarus, Mr. Mikhail V. Myasnikovich was the ‘Guest 

of  Honour’ at the ceremony. Her Excellency  Deputy Trade & Industry Minister of South 

Africa, Ms. Elizabeth Thabethe also graced the occasion.

The Republic of Belarus has  been  accorded the  ‘Partner  Country’  Status  while  South 

Africa  is  the ‘Focus   Country’  at  the  fair. 

This year, the theme of the fair is ‘Skilling India’ projecting the performance of the Central and State Ministries, Departments and private sectors in the related fields. The theme display are at Hall No. 1- foyer, highlighting different   aspects  for  continuous  upgrading of skills and  globally recognised qualifications for youth to achieve  employment  and  ensure India’s  competitiveness in  the  international  market.     

EXHIBITION 

Over 6000 Exhibitors from India and abroad are taking part in this edition of IITF.   

Overseas  participation  is  from Afghanistan,  Bangladesh ,  Canada, China, Cuba, Czech 

Republic, Egypt, Ghana, Hong Kong, Iran,  Indonesia,  Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Republic of Belarus,  Russia,  South Africa, Thailand, Turkey,   UAE  and  Vietnam.

BUSINESS DAYS

The first five days of the fair viz. November 14-18, 2012, are restricted to business visitors only.  An International Business Visitors Lounge (IBVL) at Gate No.1 will be functioning for providing facilitation services to overseas trade delegations visiting the fair under the aegis of trade associations and other recognized nodal business groups.

CULTURAL EVENTS

Added  attractions to  the  visitors   are     the   State Days celebrations at Hamsadhwani and Lal Chowk theatres, music and dance recitals of classical and semi classical genre at 

Shakuntalam and Geet, Gazal, Qawaalees at Falaknuma Theatres, Street Plays at Itihask 

Chowk, Puppet Shows  at Food  Court  Theatre .

IITF 2012 will remain open for the visitors from 9.30 a.m. to 7.30 p.m., on all days during 

November 14-27, 2012. 

TICKET PRICES

Ticket for business days visitor (November 14-18) will be Rs. 400/, while the general visitor during November 19-27, will be charged Rs.50/- (Adult) and Rs.30/-(Child) on working day and Rs.80/- and 50/- respectively on weekends and holidays. Visitor’s entry into Pragati Maidan is permitted from 9.30 a.m. to 5.00 p.m.

Chandrasekhar Kambar, Ratan Thiyam to Inaugurate Samanvay 2012

The second edition of the IHC Indian Languages Festival, Samanvay, is scheduled from November 2 – 4, 2012.

This year, the festival’s theme is Gaon–Kasba–Sheher:Boli-Bani–Bhasha

Since inception,the Centre has endeavored to create platforms for public discourse across different genres of the pursuit of excellence by Indian minds. ‘Samanvay’ is a platform for bringing together expressions of human thought in the varied and diverse cultural contexts that have been nurtured and have flourished in many languages that are spoken in our cultural milieu. These conversations amongst brilliant and well-known writers will seek to bring to our audiences the sparkle of multilingual expressions and their inspirations.

INDIA HABITAT CENTRE
The India Habitat Centre was conceived to provide a physical environment which would serve as a catalyst for a synergetic relationship between individuals and institutions working in diverse habitat related areas and, therefore, maximise their total effectiveness. To facilitate this interaction, the Centre provides a range of facilities.
Two of the greatest theater personalities of the country, Chandrasekhar Kambar and Ratan Thiyam will inaugurate Samanvay.

Jnanpith laureate Kambar is a pioneering  Kannada playwright , poet, folklorist and critic whose works have influenced generations of readers and writers all over the country. He is known for his effective usage of North Karnataka dialect of Kannada language in his plays and poems. Dr. Kambar’s plays mainly revolves around folk or mythology interlinked with contemporary issues, inculcating modern lifestyle with his hard-hitting poems and has became a pioneer of such literature. His contribution as a playwright is significant  to the Indian theater as he achieved a blend of the folk and the modern theatrical forms.

Internationally acclaimed playwright and director Ratan Thiyam is one of the leading figures of the “theater of roots” movement  which started in 1970s. He i is known for writing and staging plays that use ancient Indian theater traditions and forms in a contemporary context. He is also the founder-director of ‘Chorus Repertory Theater’, formed on the outskirts of Imphal, Manipur in 1976.

ಲಿಂಗದೇವರು ಹಳೆಮನೆ ಅವರ ನಾಟಕ ಗಡಿಯಂಕ ಕುಡಿಮುದ್ದ

ಮೈಸೂರಿನ ರಂಗಾಯಣದ ನಿರ್ದೇಶಕರಾಗಿದ್ದ ಲಿಂಗದೇವರು ಹಳೆಮನೆ ಭಾಷಾ ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಜ್ಞ ಮತ್ತುಬರಹಗಾರರು. ವಿಮರ್ಶಕ, ಸಂಶೋಧಕ, ನಾಟಕಕಾರರಾಗಿದ್ದ ಲಿಂಗದೇವರು ಹಳೇಮನೆ ಅವರು  ಕೇಂದ್ರೀಯ ಭಾಷಾ ಸಂಸ್ಥಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ಮೂರು ದಶಕ ಪ್ರಾಧ್ಯಾಪಕರಾಗಿ ಸೇವೆ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸಿದ್ದರು. ವಚನ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯದ ವಿಭಿನ್ನ ದೃಷ್ಟಿಕೋನ, ಕನ್ನಡ ನಾಟಕಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಭಾಷೆ, ಭಾರತದಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ತ್ರೀ ಸಾಕ್ಷರತೆ, ಉದ್ಯಮವಾಗಿ ರಂಗಭೂಮಿ ಇಂತಹ ವಿಚಾರಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರು ಪ್ರಬಂಧಗಳನ್ನು ಮಂಡಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ನಾಟಕಕಾರರಾಗಿ ಹಳೆಮನೆಯವರು ಹೊರತಂದಿರುವ ಹಲವು ರಂಗಕೃತಿಗಳು ಕನ್ನಡ ರಂಗಭೂಮಿಯ ಆಸ್ತಿಯಾಗಿವೆ. ಹೈದರ್, ಚಿಕ್ಕದೇವ ಭೂಪ, ಧರ್ಮಪುರಿ ದೇವದಾಸ, ಬಿರುದಂತೆಂಬರ ಗಂಡ ಇವು ಹಳೆಮನೆಯವರ ಪ್ರಮುಖ ಕೃತಿಗಳು. ಬ್ರೆಕ್ಟ್‌ನ ಹಲವಾರು ನಾಟಕಗಳನ್ನು ಹಳೆಮನೆ ಕನ್ನಡಕ್ಕೆ ತಂದುಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಆಳವಾದ ಅಧ್ಯಯನದಿಂದ ಲಿಂಗದೇವರು ಹಳೆಮನೆ ರಂಗಭೂಮಿ ಜನತೆಯ ನೋವು ನಲಿವುಗಳಿಗೆ ಸ್ಪಂದಿಸುವ ವೇದಿಕೆಯಾಗಬೇಕು ಮತ್ತು ಜಾತ್ಯಾತೀತ ಮೌಲ್ಯಗಳು ಬಹು ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿ ದೇಶವಾದ ಭಾರತದ ಮುಖ್ಯವಾದ ಸಂಗತಿಗಳಾಗಬೇಕು ಎಂದು ನಂಬಿದ್ದವರು. 

ಗಡಿಯಂಕ ಕುಡಿಮುದ್ದ

ತನ್ನ ರಾಜ್ಯವನ್ನು ವಿಸ್ತಾರಗೊಳಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಚಾಳುಕ್ಯರ ರಾಜ ಮಂಗಳೇಶನಿಗೆ ತನ್ನ ಅಣ್ಣನ ಮಗ ಇಮ್ಮಡಿ ಪುಲಿಕೇಶಿಯನ್ನು ಬಿಟ್ಟು ತನ್ನ ಮಗ ಆದಿತ್ಯನನ್ನು ಚಕ್ರಾಧಿಪತ್ಯದ ಪಟ್ಟವೇರಿಸುವ ಆಲೋಚನೆ ಬರುತ್ತದೆ. ಅದಕ್ಕನುಗುಣವಾಗಿ ಮಂತ್ರಿ ಅನಿವಾರಿತನು ಯುವರಾಜ ಇಮ್ಮಡಿ ಪುಲಿಕೇಶಿಯನ್ನು ಹತ್ಯೆಗೈಯಲು ಕೇತಮಲ್ಲ ಎಂಬ ಬಂಟನನ್ನು ನೇಮಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ.

ಇತ್ತ ರಾಜಮಾತೆ ದುರ್ಲಭಾ ದೇವಿಯವರಿಗೆ ಯುವರಾಜ ಇಮ್ಮಡಿ ಪುಲಿಕೇಶಿಯ ಯೋಗಕ್ಷೇಮವು ಮುಖ್ಯ. ಅವರು ಯುವರಾಜನ ಬೆಂಗಾವಲಿಗೆ ಗಡಿಯಂಕನಾದ ಕುಡಿಮುದ್ದನನ್ನು ನೇಮಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಕುಡಿಮುದ್ದನು ರಾಜಮಾತೆಯ ಗೂಢಾಚಾರಿಣಿ ದೇವದಾಸಿ ಕೆಂಚಬ್ಬೆಯ ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿದ್ದು ತನ್ನ ಪ್ರಾಣ ಕೊಟ್ಟಾದರು ಯುವರಾಜನನ್ನು ಕಾಪಾಡುವ ಪಣವನ್ನು ತೊಡುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಕುಡಿಮುದ್ದನಿಗೆ ಕೆಂಚಬ್ಬೆಯ ಮಗಳಾದ ಜಕ್ಕಬ್ಬೆಯ ಮೇಲೆ ಪ್ರೇಮಾಂಕುರವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.

ಕುಡಿಮುದ್ದನು ಪುಲಿಕೇಶಿಯನ್ನು ಕೇತಮಲ್ಲನಿಂದ ರಕ್ಷಿಸುವ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಂಗಳೇಶನ ಮಗ ಆದಿತ್ಯನು ಕುಡಿಮುದ್ದನ ಪ್ರೇಯಸಿ ಜಕ್ಕಬ್ಬೆಯ ಬಲಾತ್ಕಾರಕ್ಕೆ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನಿಸುವನು. ದೇವದಾಸಿ ಜಕ್ಕಬ್ಬೆ ಆದಿತ್ಯನಿಗೆ ಮೈ ಒಪ್ಪಿಸುವಳೇ? ಪುಲಿಕೇಶಿಯನ್ನು ಹತ್ಯೆಗೈಯಲು ಹೊರಟ ಕೇತಮಲ್ಲನಿಗೇನಾಯಿತು? ಚಕ್ರಾಧಿಪತ್ಯಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ನಡೆದ ಚಾಳುಕ್ಯ ಕುಟುಂಬಗಳ ಘರ್ಷಣೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅಮಾಯಕರಾದ ಗಡಿಯಂಕ, ದೇವದಾಸಿಯರ ನೋವು ದುರಂತಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಅರಳಿದ ಲವಲವಿಕೆಯ ಪ್ರೇಮಚರಿತೆ ಮತ್ತು ಸಾಹಸಗಾಥೆಯನ್ನು ನಿರ್ಲಕ್ಷಿತ ಸಮುದಾಯದ ಜೋಗತಿಯರ ಮೂಲಕ ಪ್ರಸ್ತುತಪಡಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ.

ರಂಗಭೂಮಿ, ಮಾಧ್ಯಮ ಮತ್ತು ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಆಸಕ್ತರಾಗಿರುವ ಬಾಲಕೃಷ್ಣ ನಾಯ್ಕ್ ಡಿ ಅವರು ಅಂತರ್ಜಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಕೆಂಪುಕೋಟೆ ಎಂಬ ಬ್ಲಾಗ್ ಮತ್ತು ನಾವು ದೆಹಲಿ ಕನ್ನಡಿಗರು ಎಂಬ ಯಾಹೂ ಗ್ರೂಪ್‌ಗಳ ಮೂಲಕ ದಹಲಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕನ್ನಡ ಚಟುವಟಿಕೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ತೊಡಗಿಸಿ ಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಹೆಜ್ಜೆಗೊಂದು ಬಲಿ ಮತ್ತು ಮೆಸೇಜ್ ಬಂತು ಅವರು ಬರೆದು ಪ್ರದರ್ಶಿಸಿ ಬಹುಮಾನ ಗಳಿಸಿದ ಏಕಾಂಕ ನಾಟಕಗಳು. ಅವರು ಲಿಂಗದೇವರು ಹಳೆಮನೆ ಅವರ ಗಡಿಯಂಕ ಕುಡಿಮುದ್ದ ನಾಟಕವನ್ನು ನಿರ್ದೇಶಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ. 

ಕೆಂಪುಕೋಟೆ ತಂಡ ದೆಹಲಿ ಮತ್ತು ಸುತ್ತುಮುತ್ತಲಿನ ಕನ್ನಡಿಗರಲ್ಲಿ ಅಂತರ್ಜಾಲ, ರಂಗಭೂಮಿ ಮುಂತಾದ ಮಾಧ್ಯಮಗಳ ಮೂಲಕ ಹೊಸತೊಂದು ಬೆಳಕನ್ನು ಕಾಣುವ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದೆ.
